Hair type guide

Every texture.
One guide.

The hair typing system (1A–4C) describes curl pattern, not hair health. Understanding your type helps you choose the right products — but every type can be improved with the right bond-building routine.

Type 1A · 1B · 1C

Straight hair.
Smooth, resilient,
oil-prone.

Straight hair is the most resilient hair type — the cuticle lies flat naturally, making it less prone to frizz and easier to detangle. The challenge: natural oils travel quickly down the straight shaft, making roots greasy while ends stay dry. Bond damage shows up as fine flyaways, reduced shine, and heat-damaged brittleness.

Characteristics
Cuticle lies flat — naturally smooth and reflective
Oil travels from root to tip faster than other types
More prone to appearing flat and weighed down
Heat damage appears as flyaways and loss of shine

Type 2A · 2B · 2C

Wavy hair.
Movement, frizz-prone,
versatile.

Wavy hair has a natural S-shaped pattern that sits between straight and curly. When bond-healthy, waves are defined, glossy, and hold their shape. When damaged, wavy hair goes frizzy, puffy, and loses definition quickly. The goal is restoring moisture balance to maintain wave pattern without weighing it down.

Characteristics
S-shaped wave pattern that forms from root
Prone to frizz and puffiness in humidity
Loses wave definition when dry or bond-damaged
Responds well to lightweight moisture and bond repair

Type 3A · 3B · 3C

Curly hair.
Defined, moisture-hungry,
spring-back.

Curly hair naturally forms corkscrew or ringlet patterns. The tighter the curl, the harder it is for natural oils to travel down the strand — which is why curly hair tends toward dryness. Bond health is critical: when bonds are intact, curls spring back beautifully; when damaged, they go limp, frizzy, and undefined.

Characteristics
Spiral or ringlet pattern from 3A loose curls to 3C tight corkscrews
Natural oils struggle to travel down the curved shaft
High moisture need — prone to dryness without intervention
Shrinkage of 30–50% compared to stretched length

Type 4A · 4B · 4C

Coily hair.
The tightest curl.
The most underserved.

Type 4 hair has the tightest curl pattern and the highest moisture need of any type. It's also the type that the mainstream haircare industry — including the bond treatment category — has most consistently designed products without. NUELE was founded specifically because of this gap. Every product is formulated and tested for Type 4 hair.

Characteristics
Tightest curl pattern — from defined coils (4A) to zig-zag (4C)
Highest shrinkage of any hair type — up to 75% of true length
Most prone to breakage — especially at manipulation points
Maximum moisture need — bonds weaken fastest without intervention

The bond repair guide

Identify your damage.
Choose your repair.

01
Hydrogen bond damage

Frizz, roughness,
lost smoothness

Humidity, heat, and alkaline products all weaken hydrogen bonds. Your hair feels rough to the touch, frizzes in humidity, and won't hold a style. The cuticle is raised and porous.

02
Disulfide bond damage

Breakage, split ends,
structural weakness

The most severe bond damage — caused by heat tools, bleach, relaxers, and chemical colour. Hair breaks easily, splits frequently, and feels structurally compromised. Rebuild with intensive weekly treatment.

03
Ionic bond damage

Dullness, colour fade,
lost moisture

Ionic bonds control moisture retention and colour vibrancy. When weakened, hair looks dull, colour fades faster, and hydration doesn't seem to last. The Hair Serum addresses this daily.

Scalp health

Dryness, irritation,
slow growth

Healthy hair starts at a healthy scalp. Dryness, irritation, and buildup at the scalp slow growth, cause flaking, and weaken the hair at its root. Address this overnight while you sleep.

Frequently asked

Your questions,
answered.

Hair bonds are the chemical connections that hold your hair's protein structure together. There are three types — hydrogen, disulfide, and ionic. When they're strong and intact, your hair looks and feels its healthiest. When they're damaged by heat, chemicals, colour, or daily wear, you experience breakage, frizz, dullness, and loss of definition. NUELE is formulated to restore all three.
Olaplex targets disulfide bonds using a synthetic active. K18 targets keratin chains using a synthetic biomimetic peptide. Both are real innovations — but neither is formulated with 100% naturally derived ingredients, and neither was specifically designed for curly and textured hair. NUELE restores all three bond types using only naturally derived actives, is clinically tested across all hair textures, and is fair trade sourced.
Most people notice a difference in texture and manageability from first use. Measurable improvement in breakage and frizz is typically visible after two weeks of consistent use. In our clinical trial, 91% of participants noticed improved manageability in two weeks, and 100% reported less breakage from the first application.
Yes — NUELE products are specifically beneficial for colour-treated hair. Chemical colour processes break down disulfide and ionic bonds, which is exactly what our formulas restore. Using NUELE after colouring helps preserve vibrancy and rebuild the structural damage caused by the chemical process.
Yes. Every NUELE formula is family safe and hypoallergenic, formulated at concentrations safe for all ages. No irritants, no sensitisers, no synthetic fragrance.
Most haircare products list water as their first ingredient — diluting the actives and requiring added preservatives. NUELE formulas contain no filler water. Just the active ingredients that actually do something. This means more concentrated formulas, better results per drop, and less packaging waste over time.
